Privacy Policy
Speak2Legal (“Speak2Legal”, “we”, “us”) is a legal research service. This policy explains what personal data we collect when you use the Speak2Legal website and app (the “Service”), why we use it, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and the rights you have, including under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
1. Data we collect
When you search without an account
- Your questions, typed or spoken, are sent to our servers to run the search. We do not store your questions against your identity.
- Technical data such as your IP address, browser type and the time of the request are processed by our hosting providers to deliver the page and keep the Service secure. For deep analysis (AI), we keep a one-way scrambled form of your IP address, the time, and the size and cost of the request, only to enforce daily usage limits. We do not keep the text of your AI questions.
When you create an account
- Account data: your email address and a password (stored only in hashed form by our authentication provider).
- Content you save: matters (title, court, case number, client name, next hearing, notes), tasks, hearings and reminders.
- Documents you upload: the file, its name, type and size, and the text we extract from it so it can be searched and summarised. Uploaded documents are private to your account.
- Activity records: a short log of actions on your account (for example, “document uploaded”), kept for security and so you can see what changed.
Voice
When you tap the microphone, speech is turned into text by your browser’s built-in speech recognition, not by Speak2Legal. Depending on your browser, the audio may be processed by the browser maker (for example, Google for Chrome or Apple for Safari) under their own privacy terms. We receive only the resulting text. “Speak answers aloud” uses your device’s built-in voice and sends nothing to us.
Court records
The Service contains judgments and orders published by Indian courts, including the names of parties, advocates and judges as they appear in those public records. See section 7.
2. Why we use your data
- To provide the Service: run searches, show your saved matters and tasks, analyse documents you upload, and send account emails (sign-up confirmation, password reset).
- To keep the Service secure and working: prevent abuse, enforce usage limits, fix errors.
- To improve the Service using aggregate, non-identifying statistics.
We process your personal data on the basis of your consent, given when you use the Service or create an account, and for the legitimate uses permitted by law. You may withdraw consent at any time by deleting your account or writing to us; this does not affect processing already done.
We do not sell personal data, use it for advertising, or use your saved matters or documents to train AI models.
3. Who we share it with
We use the following service providers (“data processors”) only to run the Service. Each is bound by its own security and privacy commitments.
| Provider | What it does | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, sign-in and file storage, hosted in the Mumbai, India region | Account data, saved content, uploaded documents, court records |
| Render | Hosts the website | Technical data needed to deliver pages |
| Anthropic (Claude) | AI deep analysis, only when you press “Deep analysis” | Your question and the text of the public court orders being analysed |
| Google Fonts, cdnjs, jsDelivr | Deliver fonts and standard code libraries to your browser | Technical data (IP address, browser) |
Please do not type a client’s confidential details into a deep-analysis question. Describe the legal issue instead (for example, “anticipatory bail in a cheating case, Bombay High Court”).
We may disclose data if required by law, a court order or a lawful request of a government authority, or to protect the rights and safety of users and the public.
Some providers may process data outside India. Where they do, we rely on their contractual and security safeguards, and we will follow any restrictions the Government of India notifies under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
4. How long we keep it
- Account data and saved content: until you delete it or close your account.
- Uploaded documents: until you delete them (each document has a delete button) or close your account.
- AI usage records (scrambled identifier, time, size and cost): up to 12 months, for billing and abuse prevention.
- Hosting providers’ technical logs: for the short periods set by those providers.
When you close your account, we delete your account data, saved content and documents within 30 days, except where the law requires us to keep something longer.
5. Security
Connections are encrypted (HTTPS). Each user’s matters, tasks and documents are protected so that only that user’s signed-in account can read them, and uploaded files are stored privately. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affecting your personal data occurs, we will inform you and the authorities as the law requires.
6. Your rights
You can ask us to:
- tell you what personal data we hold about you and how it is used;
- correct or complete inaccurate data;
- delete your data and close your account;
- withdraw consent;
- nominate another person to exercise these rights if you die or become unable to do so.
Write to info@speak2legal.com from the email address on your account. We will respond within the period required by law. If you are not satisfied, you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
7. Public court records
Judgments and orders on Speak2Legal come from records published by the Supreme Court of India and the High Courts. We show them as published and do not add personal data to them. If an order concerns you and you believe it should not be shown (for example, it should have been anonymised, or it concerns a minor or a victim of a sexual offence), write to us with the case details and we will review it promptly and remove or mask it where appropriate.
8. Children
The Service is intended for adults. Do not create an account if you are under 18.
9. Changes
We may update this policy. We will change the effective date above and, for significant changes, tell signed-in users in the app or by email before the change takes effect.
